About Gumboot Dancing

Gumboot Dancing originated in the gold mines of apartheid-era South Africa, principally as a means of expression and communication amongst those working in a punishing environment where talking was forbidden. From these origins Gumboot Dancing developed as an art form and has now become part of South Africa's cultural identity, performed all over the world by groups originating from both within the Republic and elsewhere.

Gumboot is a high energy, percussive, fun dance which - because of its unconventional moves - appeals to those children not normally quick to embrace more conventional forms of dance. Basic steps are easy to pick up and moves are easily adapted to suit differing abilities.

The music which accompanies the dance is varied and can range from rhythmic beats pounded out on a djembe, to melodic songs which speak of the hardships encountered by the miners.
